Getting started with the saxophone

Many adults pick up the saxophone because of one sound they love. The first notes come quickly; playing in tune and with a steady rhythm is what takes practice. tonestro listens to every note and shows you right away what was right.

Practice a few minutes on most days and give your lips time to get stronger. Slow a passage down, play it clean, then speed it up.

Is the saxophone a good instrument to start as an adult?

Yes. Many adults start the saxophone without any experience. tonestro goes step by step and listens to every note you play.

Which saxophone can I use?

Alto, tenor, soprano or baritone. tonestro works with all four.

Is there a fingering chart?

Yes. The fingering chart is built into the app, so you can look up every note while you practice.

Do I need to read music?

No. The courses teach you to read music while you play, and you can show note names while you learn.

How soon will I play my first saxophone song?

In your first 10 minutes. You play one or two notes along with a real song and a band: small at first, but real music. Full speed comes later, as your sound grows.

Which devices can I use?

Saxophone lessons run on iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or newer) and on Android phones (Android 8 or newer, at least 4 GB of memory). tonestro needs an internet connection.

What does it cost?

You can try tonestro free for 7 days with the yearly plan. The app shows you the price before you buy. If you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, you won’t be charged. You can cancel in the app under Profile → Settings → Manage Subscription.
